Omara Strategy Group President Leads Panel Discussion at Netroots Nation on Impact of Women of Color in 2024 Elections

Earlier this month at Netroots Nation 2024, the largest annual gathering of progressives nationwide, Omara Strategy Group Founder, Atima Omara led another all women of color panel on the impact of women of color as voters and leaders in the progressive space and Democratic politics. Here are some takeaways:

1️⃣ Women of color elected officials are the biggest champions of progressive legislation change addressing the social safety net, criminal justice reform and other interlocking issues from a progressive perspective. According to research released in 2020 conducted by the Scholars Strategy Network of 15 state legislatures

2️⃣Women of color are a fraction of the elected officials at the federal and statewide level. (62.3% of all women voting members of Congress are white and 76.8% of all women statewide elected executives are white). It will take a lot more work for Black, Latina, and Asian women to get to parity in public office and they need more support as candidates

3️⃣ Women of color voters are the strongest base of support for the Democratic Party, but they need to be mobilized to turnout. In 2020: 92% of Black women voters, 65% of Latinas, and 69% of AAPI women supported the Biden-Harris ticket in the election.

4️⃣ Funders need to give money to women of color led organizations and campaigns on the ground to turn out communities of color in elections year round and elect progressive candidates. Not just in the final 60 days of the election
