Recently our Founder & President, Atima Omara attended the Campaign & Elections Magazine’s Annual Reed Conference & Awards. There she led an all women of color expert political strategist panel at the Democratic Strategy Session on engaging voters of color in the 2024 elections who will be critical to Democratic victories not just for the White House, but Congress, and many state, local, and ballot measures across the country.
Here were the key takeaways for Democratic strategists and campaign staff alike:
1) Don’t assume any voters (but especially voters of color) who have come out in elections past are going to come out again without voter engagement and outreach
2) Hire consultants and staff of color from the communities you are reaching
3) Start voter engagement and outreach to voters of color BEFORE August.
4) Prioritize funding for engagement of voters of color. This should not be an afterthought
5) Women of color (Black, Latina, Asian, Indigenous) are active voters and play pivotal roles in turning out their communities in elections and for other causes. Seek to engage their leadership
